What is Acoustic Emission Testing?

Acoustic Emission Testing (AET) uses sensitive sensors to “listen” for transient elastic waves generated by active defects such as crack growth, corrosion activity, leakage, or fibre breakage.

Unlike many conventional NDT methods that provide a snapshot, AET can monitor an asset under load or during operation to identify where active damage is occurring—so you can focus follow-up inspection and maintenance where it matters most.

Why AET

Key advantages for integrity monitoring

AET is well-suited for large structures and components where identifying active damage is critical.

Detects active defects

Highlights crack growth and other active mechanisms—not just existing indications.

Large area coverage

Sensor arrays can monitor wide areas, reducing inspection time on large assets.

Real-time monitoring

Useful during pressure tests, proof loading, or operational monitoring.

Pinpoint follow-up inspection

Helps target UT/PAUT/RT follow-up to the most relevant locations.

Reduced downtime

Supports condition-based decisions to minimise unnecessary shutdowns.

Improved risk visibility

Provides actionable insights for maintenance planning and asset integrity management.

How we deliver AET

Typical AET workflow

A clear, documented approach—from planning to reporting—aligned to your asset and operating conditions.

1) Scope & test planning

Define objectives, acceptance criteria, sensor layout, and test conditions (e.g., pressure steps, hold times, load cases).

2) Sensor installation & system setup

Install sensors and couplants, verify signal paths, and perform calibration checks to ensure reliable acquisition.

3) Monitoring during loading/operation

Capture and classify acoustic events in real time, applying noise discrimination and location algorithms.

4) Analysis & reporting

Provide event plots, source locations, severity assessment (where applicable), and recommendations for follow-up NDT or maintenance actions.
