What is PAUT?

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) uses multiple ultrasonic elements and electronic beam steering to inspect welds and components from many anglesโ€”without moving the probe as much as conventional UT.

The result is a detailed cross-sectional view of indications, improved coverage in complex geometries, and reliable sizing to support acceptance criteria and repair decisions.

Why choose PAUT

Key advantages for weld integrity and asset reliability

PAUT is ideal when you need better coverage, clearer imaging, and confident sizingโ€”especially for critical welds and thickness transitions.

High-resolution imaging

Sectorial scans provide a clear view of indications for easier interpretation and review.

Improved coverage

Electronic beam steering helps inspect from multiple angles to reduce missed areas.

Accurate sizing & location

Supports reliable depth/position information to guide repair decisions and acceptance.

Efficient on-site execution

Faster scanning and repeatable setups help minimise downtime where access allows.

Digital data & traceability

Scan data can be stored for audit trails, comparisons, and client review.

Works with complementary methods

Often paired with TOFD/UT/VT to strengthen coverage based on project needs.

Typical applications

Where PAUT is commonly used

We tailor procedures and scan plans to the component, access, and acceptance criteria. Common PAUT use cases include:

Weld inspection

Butt welds, fillet welds, and critical joints in piping, pressure equipment, and structural steel.

Fabrication & construction QA/QC

New build inspections, repair verification, and documentation for project handover.

In-service inspection

Monitoring for cracking, lack of fusion, and other reportable indications during maintenance windows.

Complex geometries

Thickness transitions, restricted access areas, and components where conventional UT coverage is challenging.

How we deliver

Our PAUT workflow

A disciplined process helps ensure consistent results and clear deliverablesโ€”aligned to project requirements.

1) Scope & acceptance criteria

Confirm component details, access, drawing/WPS information, and the relevant acceptance criteria and reporting needs.

2) Procedure & scan plan

Select probe/wedge, define focal laws, calibration blocks, and coverage to suit the weld geometry and expected flaw orientation.

3) Calibration & verification

Perform sensitivity/TCG (as applicable), verify index/angle, and confirm system performance before scanning.

4) Scanning, analysis & reporting

Acquire scan data, evaluate indications, and issue a clear report with locations, sizing (where applicable), and recommendations.
